For the third time present at Guimarães Jazz, where she performed in 2012 as part of the Joe Lovano and Dave Douglas’ co-led quintet and in 2021 in trio alongside Vijay Iyer and Tyshawn Sorey, bassist Linda May Han Oh will appear this year leading a quartet featuring three prestigious musicians of contemporary jazz – saxophonist Greg Ward, guitarist Matthew Stevens and drummer Jeff Ballard. Widely recognized by specialized critics as an instrumentalist of excellence and a multifaceted composer, Linda Oh explores through this quartet a more direct approach to the jazz canon, reconciling the deconstruction of improvisation with innovative compositional phrases, while at the same time incorporating elements of a hybrid and open artistic identity.
Linda May Han Oh was born in Malaysia, grew up in Australia and is currently based in New York, a trajectory which in itself is the epitome of a globalized and cosmopolitan world where all cultural interconnections are possible. Throughout her career, this talented bassist and composer has collaborated with some of the most influential names of contemporary jazz, such as Pat Metheny, Kenny Barron, Geri Allen or Ambrose Akinmusire, and has released to this date five albums under her own name, among them the most recent “Aventurine”, an incursion in a highly complex musical universe expanded by string arrangements that transcends the sensorial experience of pure jazz. Considered by many one of the most prominent bassists of the current generation in command of the jazz scene, Linda May Han Oh also composes regularly for cinema and is currently a teacher at the Berklee College of Music.
A native from the state of Illinois and an eclectic musician with a diversified curriculum composing for different ensembles, saxophonist Greg Ward has in recent years consolidated his reputation as one of the prominent instrumentalists of the current North-American jazz scene. Besides his long-term artistic partnership with Linda Oh, Ward has collaborated with several influential names of contemporary music, among them bassist William Parker, saxophonist Andrew D’Angelo or post-rock band from Chicago, Tortoise, and in parallel he teaches at the University of Indiana.
Described by jazz critics as a singular musician whose style harmonizes the universes of jazz, rock and ambient music within a common musical language, Matthew Stevens holds an impressive record of collaborations with many important contemporary musicians, among which we may highlight the partnership with vocalist and bassist Esperanza Spalding, with trumpeter Dave Douglas and with legendary producers Quincy Jones and Tony Visconti. In parallel to his collaborative activity, Stevens is also creative solo and as leader, having released several albums under his own name, the most recent of them the work “In Common III”, featuring veteran bassist Dave Holland.
Jeff Ballard is a drummer from California who is considered one of the most prominent of his generation due to his work alongside both some of the historical names of popular North-American music, such as Ray Charles or Chick Corea, as well as several influential names of modern jazz, namely the renowned pianist Brad Mehldau, with whom Ballard has recorded and toured extensively. Besides his activity as sideman, Jeff Ballard is also a composer, a work which he explores in trio and with the project Fly, which he co-leads with saxophonist Mark Turner and bassist Larry Grenadier.
