Far from showing the same creative force of the jazz scene of the 1990’s or the same audacity the underground effervescence of the first post-millenial years, led by musicians and labels associated to experimentalism and avant-garde trends, France occupies nowadays a secondary position in European music. However, there all still some interesting musicians and projects, such as this classical trio of piano, bass and drums led by pianist and composer Stéphan Oliva, himself one of the prominent figures of jazz’s new wave that, three decades ago, injected a new dynamics of vitality in French jazz.
A pianist of great melodic sensibility, Stéphan Oliva (b. 1959, France) began his career in 1991, when he recorded for the first time with his trio In 1993 he released his first solo album, Clair Obscur, which earned him wide critical acclamation. His posterior activity included collaborations with important names of the French jazz scene, such as Bruno Chevillon, and international artists, namely drummers Paul Motian and Joey Baron and singer Linda Sharrock. Besides his strictly musical activity, Oliva also composes movie soundtracks, having worked extensively with filmmaker Jacques Maillot.
Besides Stéphan Oliva, the trio that will perform at Guimarães Jazz is formed by bassist Sébastien Boisseau and great North-American drummer Tom Rainey.
Sébastien Boisseau is, since the beginning of the third millennium, an important musician of French Jazz. Throughout the last twenty-years, he collaborated with some of the most prominent figures of French jazz, namely Michel Portal, Martial Solal and Louis Sclavis. From his most recent work we may highlight his trio with pianist Joachim Kühn and drummer Christian Lillinger, and the duo WOOD, with Matthieu Donarier, in the context of which Boisseau was able to collaborate with contemporary music creators such as Sylvie Courvoisier and Mark Feldman.
Tom Rainey (b. 1957, USA) is a drummer of remarkable technical resources whose musical style is somewhere between the traditional jazz and the experimentation associated to avant-garde trends, namely those that emerged within the New York musical scene of the 1980s and of which Rainey was a relevant participant. With a career of almost forty years in jazz, this highly creative drummer collaborated with some of the fundamental figures of contemporary jazz, such as Ralph Alessi, Tony Malaby or Mark Helias, and developed a creative partnership of particular intensity with influent saxophonist Tim Berne. In 2010, Rainey presented his first album as leader, Pool School, released by Portuguese jazz label Clean Feed, a trio work featuring two distinguished women from the experimental jazz scene of the twenty-first century – guitarist Mary Halvorson and saxophonist Ingrid Laubrock.
