In 2019, the residency organized in partnership between Guimarães Jazz Porta-jazz will encompass the collaboration between two important musicians of the Portuguese jazz of the last decade – guitarist Miguel Moreira and drummer Mário Costa –, Swiss saxophonist and clarinettist Lucien Dubuis – an important musician of European’s avant-garde jazz scene – and the dancer Valter Fernandes. This year, the centre of this multidisciplinary project, based on a principle of intersection and mutual influence between different artistic media, is the relation between jazz and dance, and will, as in previous years, be recorded and released by Porta-Jazz.
Miguel Moreira is currently on the most prominent guitarist of the Portuguese musical scene, due to his prolific activity, which led him to collaborate with important Portuguese and international musicians such as Mário Santos, José Pedro Coelho or, more recently, Chris Cheek and João Mortágua, as well as contemporary music groups (Miquel Bernat’s Drumming and the Remix Ensemble) and pop music artists such as Sérgio Godinho and Manuela Azevedo.
Mário Costa is one of the most important musicians appearing during the last decade in Portuguese jazz, the result of a multifaceted work including collaborations of very different names of contemporary music such as bassist Hugo Carvalhais, saxophonist Tim Berne, drummer Chris Corsano and Fado singer Ana Moura. Of his most recent work it is relevant to highlight the project sFumato, in which Mário Costa is featured alongside Michel Portal, Joachim Kühn and Émile Parisien.
Lucien Dubuis is a Swiss musicians and composer with a relevant activity in the European avant-garde jazz and improvised music circuit. A versatile instrumentalist and an audacious composer, Dubuis presents an impressive creative curricula both as leader as well as in collaboration with remarkable contemporary musicians such as Marc Ribot, Alfred Vogel and Barry Guy, among others.
Rui Rodrigues is a founding member of Drumming, the percussion group directed by Miguel Bernat, and collaborated as musician and soloist on several orchestras and classical and contemporary music formations. His interest in improvisation and composition has led to his participation in other projects connected to other arts such as poetry, dance, theatre, image and New Circus.
Valter Fernandes is a dancer and choreographer in ascension in the field of contemporary dance, having worked with Portuguese reference choreographers such as Vitor Hugo Pontes and Né Barros. Valter Fernandes’ authorial work is influenced by B- Boying, an urban dance which marked the beginning of the dancer’s relation with dance and which is still present in the themes and the style of his work as choreographer.
