In 2021, Guimarães Jazz and association Porta-Jazz
reenact a partnership devoted to the idea of promoting collaboration between
jazz musicians and visual artists, which this year will be starred by a group
of five young instrumentalists led by Inês Malheiro and by visual artist Carolina
Fangueiro. According the its creator’s own words, this performance/concert
engages on a search for a “connection between the sound space and scenic space”
in an attempt to expand music’s sensorial impact though the domain of
visuality, thereby illuminating the primordial presence preceding sound.
Inês Malheiro is an artist dedicated to the
exploration of the performative dimension of voice and sound and to the
creation of composed or improvised narratives. In the course of her trajectory
in the field of art she has collaborated with several musicians and artists
(for example, rapper Capicua and drummer and composer Pedro Melo Alves, among
others), while at the same time developing her own creations solo (the series
of music pieces entitled “The endless chaos has an end”) or in co-creation
regime, as in the case of the works “Canal-Conduto” and “Organismus Kathársis
II”, done in collaboration with Gonçalo Penas and Francisca Marques.
João Almeida is a trumpeter and improviser from the
new generation of Portuguese jazz who, like many of his contemporaries,
concluded academic studies in music and collaborated with the Hot Club Jazz
Orchestra, in the context of which he had the opportunity to work with
prestigious musicians such as Julian Argüelles or John Hollenbeck. In most
recent years, Almeida has intensified his relation with non-idiomatic
improvisation, leading him to collaborations with influential names from the
Lisbon avant-jazz scene, such as Rodrigo Amado, Ernesto Rodrigues or Abdul
Moimême.
At the age of twenty-five, Vicente Mateus is a
talented drummer and one of the most highlighted names of the most recent
generation of artists from Porto. A graduate of plastic and sound arts, this
young artist and musician works mainly in collaborative regime within the
fields of sound and drawing, using drums as a central vehicle of artistic
expression.
Currently residing in Copenhagen, saxophonist,
composer and producer Daniel Sousa incorporates in his own musical language the
ideas, concepts and practices coming from the fields of genre-bending, sound
art and sound design. With an academic background in jazz, classical music and
performance, he is a MEDINEA (Mediterranean Incubator of Emerging Artists),
collaborates with the CICP (Composers and Improvisers Community Project) and
is, along with Joana Alhau, a member of the duo 293 diagonal.
José Vale is a guitarist and composer who focus mainly
on improvised, psychedelic and noise music. He is the founder of the groups Lucifer’s
Pool Party, Tentáculo and miscalculation has found the new truth.
He also develops solo work under the name kagemushin and collaborates
with collectives OU.TU.BRO and Unsafe Space Garden.
Currently residing in Porto, Carolina Fangueiro is an
artist who studied at the Faculty of Fine-Arts of Lisbon and with complementary
formation in ballet, contemporary dance and classical music. Her work uses
different media (painting, sculpture, ceramics, sound, dance and performance)
and since 2016 she regularly participates and organizes exhibitions in Lisbon,
Coimbra and Braga.
