2023.11.11 GJ Projeto CEJ-UA / Guimarães Jazz • Pedro Molina Quartet

The winner of the 2023 award promoted by the Centre of Jazz Studies of the University of Aveiro was the Pedro Molina Quartet, whose original arrangement of the themes “Will I Die, Will I Die”, by Avishai Cohen, and Wayne Shorter’s “Nefertiti”, blended into a single composition entitled “Will I Die, Nefertiti?”, captivated the attention of the jury. Besides the Galician double-bassist who leads this project, the quartet also includes Miguel Meirinhos on piano, Filipe Dias on guitar and Gonçalo Ribeiro on drums, all of them emerging names of the most recent generation of Portuguese jazz and whose musical identity enriches the original ideas developed by Molina.

A native of Murcia, Spain currently residing in Porto, Pedro Molina began his studies in double-bass at the Spanish city of Alicante, proceeded his musical education in Barcelona with double-bassist Jordi Gaspar, and concluded his academic formation at ESMAE. Throughout his professional career Molina has performed in some of the most prestigious jazz festival in the Iberia Peninsula, in collaboration with musicians such as Elena Gómez, Pierre Léon, Fabio Miano, Pedro Gerónimo, Geof Bradsfield or J. Bird Peterson.

Born in 1998, Miguel Meirinhos is pianist graduated at ESMAE and currently residing in Porto. During the last few years, he was a member of several ensembles focused on the interpretation of original music. In 2022 he released his debut album as leader, entitled “Ninhos”, based on both his original music and compositions written by vocalist Joana Raquel. More recently he has been collaborating with prominent projects from Porto’s jazz scene, such as the Mário Barreiros Quartet and the Nuno Campos Quartet, and he is currently a member of the Matosinhos Jazz Orchestra.

Filipe Dias (b. 1990) is a guitarist graduated at ESMAE, where he studied with Eurico Costa, Virxilio da Silva and Nuno Ferreira. In 2017 Dias became member of the group that represented ESMAE at the jazz festival promoted by the S. Luiz Theater (which was awarded with the opportunity to perform live at Casa da Música, a concert that was broadcasted by the radio station Antena 2) and he is also a regular collaborator of the groups Quinteto de Ninguém, Loren Things, Antón Iglesias and Tiago Baptista Quartet and Filipe Dias Trio.

A native of Guarda, Gonçalo Ribeiro is a drummer graduated in jazz at the Lusíada University and at ESMAE, where he studied with Michel Lauren. His professional curriculum includes his activity as a member of the AP Quartet, the band InnerVille and the Gianni Narduzzi Quartet, as well as sporadic collaborations with the Matosinhos Jazz Orchestra and the project “Serpente”, led by the prestigious arranger and composer Carlos Azevedo.
